blah blah blah tell me What it is, NOT What Yooou think it is.....
I thought the article "The roots of debate in Education and the Hope of Dialogue" by Deborah Tannan was very interesting. Tannan talked alot about how women didn't respond as much as men did in thier college classes. (3WOMAN to 8MEN! Come on girls.. we need to speak up!?) This surprised me, I thought woman always threw their two cents about everything, expecialy when a controversial agrgument approached her? I know I do. I agree 100% with Tannan that i don't care what the other person is saying or if the other person has the right answer, I LOVE to argue to prove , that "IM RIGHT"! We tend to ignore our opponents facts and only focus on what we're trying to get out and pursue the other person that YOU are right. Tannan says, students are taught that they must disprove other's arguments in order to be original & to keep their independence. True. Is that what we are soposed to do? If So, how do we catch the attention and pursue? Well in this article she talks about different ways of debate in college. They use poetry by pursueing by emotion, but it was said "to be unfair persuasive tactics". What about Learning by fighting?... Does arguing your point in an yelling match get us anywhere? I don't think so, if anything it makes people even more mad to stop listening to what the other person even says and just throw out your crazy opinions louder and more FALSE. So how does Tannan suggest we move beyond this argumental culture?.... She quotes, "Most theories are wrong not in what they assert but what they deny." We need to be open to others opinions. Read as if we believed! Open our mind, widen our view of debate. We DON"T have to make others wrong to prove that were right....
I think debate is a great... everyone has a different oppion ad some the same, but instead of trying to win a debate match we do need to use our imaginations, speak up ladies, ask questions if we dont get something, listen more to others oppions and maybe we'll get the Answer....
Great response to the article, I did notice that fact that it seems more women have problems in college arguements than men but I agree with you, I don't see why they have a problem as my wife seems to beleive only what she wants to and will argue her point even if it might not be the best way of doing things. (I don't know the best way either most times, so not that she is wrong all the time)

ReplyDeleteI love how when I read your post I can actually hear you saying it. It makes me want to add more attitude into my writing. I think you have a point that women usually do have to add their two cents, but in an educational setting I think most women sit back and observe. Some women get a little intimidated when other men speak or if they aren't called on right away women's feelings get hurt and they don't want to say anything at all. I have seen a lot of this in our class and other classes.

LALALALALA,
ReplyDeletehey, good response for real. I really do agree with your way of putting things, but i would like to challange your opinion. Just immaginge two intellegent people having a dissagreement in class and you are listening. Wouldn't you start forming your own opinion on what the two are talking about? I find myself doing that sometimes. On the other hand I do not learn anythign when people are attacking eachother and not the subject, it gets annoying and irritating. When it comes to women speaking in the classroom, I aggree with you and the author that some should speak up. There are so many intellegent women who are too afraid to speak up when they really do have alot of good insight. and by the way, way to get ur reading done early :) i just finished reading like 10 minsd ago and its wednesday haha. PEACE

hey I really liked your response. I am like you I love to prove that i am right. It is sad to me that not alot of women are standing up and saying anything men are beating us on this and why is that? i don't really know but i certainly hope that it can be fixed and soon. Thanks for your insight i enjoyed it!
