Whohoo VERBS TO INTRODUCE QUOTES!!!

I am always stryuggling with verbs .. seems to be the eaisiest thing, but slips my mind when writing! I foung some verbs to help introduce yo quotations!
HERE ARE a FEW! :)

concludes
comments
notes
maintains
suggests
insists
observes
counters
implies
states
claims
demonstrates
says
explains
reveals
"Each verb has its own nuance. Make sure that the nuance matches your specific aims in introducing the quotation.
There are other ways to begin quotations. Here are three common phrasings:
In the words of X, . . .
According to X, . . .
In X's view, . . .
Vary the way you introduce quotations to avoid sounding monotonous. But never sacrifice precision of phrasing for the sake of variety.

  1. This is a really helpful list. Word choice is definitely key in any piece. And to risk sounding like a broken record it's certainly good to mix it up a bit with some more interesting verbs. Thanks!

  2. yo yo la la!! nice list, mmm pretty sure i should have read this before i wrote my essay on Martin Luther Kings " I Have a Dream" speech. but of course i have to wait till an hour nefore class to post my blog. anywho, ill keep this in mind. xoxo love you
